When the Cambridge Prosthetics team was approached by Consultant Plastic and Reconstruction Surgeon, Keith Anderson to present about the patient journey from amputation to prosthetic fitting and beyond, Erin Main took the opportunity to stretch and challenge herself, presenting to 15 Plastic Surgery Registrars at Addenbrooke’s Hospital.
Erin’s presentation covered the role of the Prosthetist, the appointment pathway, prosthesis eligibility criteria, the process of making a prosthesis and problems affecting fitting. She highlighted the characteristics of the residual limb which have a significant impact on prosthetic fitting, especially areas of interest to the Plastic Surgeons such as skin grafting, neuromas and tissue consistency.
Erin was very happy with the overall experience; “Personally, it was a wonderful opportunity for me to gain a greater understanding of the surgeons’ role and the surgeons were grateful to have learned about the bigger picture of what happens to their patients post-surgery.”
