What is Ground Reaction AFO?
A thermoplastic shell which encompasses the posterior (back) half of the calf and extends from the upper calf (or just below depending on the design) to underneath the foot. It has the addition of a padded front shell also in thermoplastic which can be fixed or removable. The AFO is secured at the calf by velcro straps and an instep strap secures the foot in position. There may be additional padding to protect bony areas.
What does it do?
This type of AFO is used specifically to apply forces to assist in extension (straightening) of the knee in walking in addition to stabilising the ankle/foot complex.
