Ankle Sprain

What is an Ankle Sprain?

Ankle sprains are injuries caused when an unnatural twisting movement is applied to the ankle which exerts higher than normal stretching forces to the ligaments, causing damage. Ligaments are special tissues which connect bones to each other and allow controlled movement between them.

Symptoms

The tissue injury will cause inflammation to occur. Inflammation is characterised by a combination of heat, redness, swelling and pain.

Treatments

Depending on the degree of support and control required for the ankle joint complex the following types of orthoses can be used:

Elasticated ankle support

Stirrup type ankle brace
