What are Shin Splits – Foot & Ankle?
The cause of the most common type of shin splints, Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome, is inflammation of the muscle tendon where it attaches to the thin layer of tissue (periosteum) which covers the tibia (shin bone) and is linked to over pronation. It is commonly termed an over use injury.
Symptoms
Common symptoms include aching or tenderness along the front inner side of the lower leg. Symptoms will often increase with activity such as running.
Treatments
Functional Foot Orthotics to control the over pronation are very effective as it improves foot biomechanics and reduces the stresses in the leg which allows the soft tissues to recover.
