Sesamoiditis

What is Sesamoiditis?

Usually caused by excessive, repetitive pressure under the front of the foot, from activities such as running or dancing, leading to Inflammation of the 2 small sesamoid bones (bones contained within the tendon that runs underneath the big toe) under the 1st Metatarso-phalangeal Joint (MPJ).

Symptoms

Pain under the base of the big toe joint (1st MPJ) which is usually of gradual onset and becomes more severe as the aggravating activity continues.

Treatments

• An insole to reduce the pressure on the affected area and reduce loading on the joint can be beneficial.
