Congenital Dislocation of the Hip (CDH)

What is Congenital Dislocation of the Hip (CDH)?

The condition can be caused due to incorrect development of the ball shaped head of femur (thigh bone) and/or the socket shaped cup of the pelvis (hip bone). Alternatively it may be due to weakness or laxity in the ligaments which stabilise the hip joint. The result is a hip joint which becomes displaced or dislocated.

Symptoms

When detected at birth there may be stiffness in the affected hip and a “clicking” sound when the hip is moved. If left un-addressed a leg length discrepancy often occurs and in adults there may be osteoarthritis in the joint.

Treatments

• Raise adaptation to footwear to address the leg length discrepancy.

Shock absorbing insole may assist in reducing pain associated with the impact of the heel striking the floor where arthritic changes have occurred.
